Öz — un voyage l’un vers l’autre

Il existe des langages que l’on ne comprend pas avec des mots. Des rythmes, des mélodies, des gestes et des silences qui portent une histoire, une culture, une manière unique d’habiter la musique.

Les Öz Sessions sont une série de rencontres musicales imaginées par le percussionniste Simon Leleux, qui en est le fil rouge et le musicien récurrent. À chaque session, il invite un artiste issu des scènes world et/ou jazz, en Belgique ou à l’étranger, porteur d’un univers et d’un langage musical singuliers.

À travers le doholla et son propre parcours de recherche sonore, Simon va à la rencontre de cet univers : en écouter les codes, en explorer les chemins et chercher les points de rencontre possibles. Deux musiciens se retrouvent ainsi sur scène avec leurs histoires, leurs influences et leurs intuitions. Une base composée ouvre un espace d’improvisation où chacun écoute, répond, provoque et surprend l’autre.

C’est une conversation.

La musique se construit dans l’instant, quelque part entre ce qui a été imaginé et ce qui apparaît soudainement. Chaque Öz Session devient ainsi une création à part entière, façonnée par la personnalité de l’invité et par le dialogue qui se noue. Une rencontre véritable ne se répète jamais exactement.

Le public est invité à entrer dans cette intimité : être témoin de l’échange entre deux univers, découvrir des traditions et des langages musicaux parfois méconnus, et ressentir les moments où deux sensibilités se rapprochent, se confrontent et finissent par inventer un nouvel espace commun.

Le mot turc öz, que l’on peut traduire par « essence », porte l’intention de ces rencontres. Au cœur du projet se trouve une volonté de favoriser la diversité, le dialogue et les échanges interculturels à travers l’improvisation, l’écoute et l’exploration musicale partagée.

Le concept est né en 2020 en partenariat avec le Crix Café à Saint-Gilles, à Bruxelles. Alors intitulé Crossroads, il prenait la forme d’une série de concerts mensuels durant toute une saison et a également donné lieu à une collaboration avec De Centrale à Gand.

À l’invitation du Crix Café et à la suite du succès de cette première édition, les Öz Sessions reviennent pour la saison 2026–2027, à Bruxelles (Crix Café), Gand (De Muzikantenhuis), Ronquières (Péniche Agami) et Lokeren (Studio Nanda).

BAO SISSOKO 

Le griot mandingue Bao Sissoko, établi en Belgique, est reconnu pour son jeu raffiné et virtuose de la kora. Au cours de sa longue carrière, il s’est produit aux côtés d’artistes renommés tels que Baaba Maal, Abou Thiam, Mamy Kanouté, Zap Mama, Vaya Con Dios et Damon Albarn. Il a notamment collaboré avec Malick Pathé Sow sur l’album Aduna, salué par The Guardian comme le meilleur album africain en exil de l’année. Il est également membre du trio Tamala avec Wouter Vandenabeele et Mola Sylla.

 

 

Öz — a journey towards one another

There are languages that cannot be understood through words. Rhythms, melodies, gestures and silences that carry a history, a culture and a unique way of inhabiting music.

The Öz Sessions are a series of musical encounters conceived by percussionist Simon Leleux, who is the recurring musician and connecting thread throughout the series. For each session, he invites an artist from the world and/or jazz scenes, based in Belgium or abroad, with a distinctive musical universe and language.

Through the doholla and his own exploration of sound, Simon enters into this universe: listening to its codes, exploring its paths and searching for possible points of connection. Two musicians meet on stage, bringing their own histories, influences and intuitions. A composed foundation opens up a space for improvisation, where each listens, responds, challenges and surprises the other.

It is a conversation.

The music takes shape in the moment, somewhere between what has been imagined beforehand and what suddenly emerges. Each Öz Session therefore becomes a creation in its own right, shaped by the guest’s personality and by the dialogue that unfolds. A genuine encounter never happens exactly the same way twice.

The audience is invited into this intimacy: to witness an exchange between two musical worlds, discover traditions and musical languages that may be unfamiliar, and experience the moments when two sensibilities draw closer, confront one another and ultimately create a new shared space.

The Turkish word öz, which can be translated as “essence,” reflects the intention behind these encounters. At the heart of the project is a desire to foster diversity, dialogue and intercultural exchange through improvisation, listening and shared musical exploration.

The concept was born in 2020 in partnership with Crix Café in Saint-Gilles, Brussels. Originally called Crossroads, it took the form of a monthly concert series running throughout an entire season and also led to a collaboration with De Centrale in Ghent.

At the invitation of Crix Café and following the success of this first edition, the Öz Sessions return for the 2026–2027 season in Brussels (Crix Café), Ghent (De Muzikantenhuis), Ronquières (Péniche Agami) and Lokeren (Studio Nanda).

The Mandinka griot Bao Sissoko, established in Belgium, is renowned for his refined and virtuoso playing of the kora. In his long career he has performed with well known artists such as Baaba Maal, Abou Thiam, Mamy Kanouté, Zap Mama, Vaya Con Dios, Damon Albarn. He notably collaborated with Malick Pathé Sow on the album Aduna, the album of which was qualified as the best African exile album of the year by The Guardian. He is part of the Tamala trio with Wouter Vandenabeele and Mola Sylla.
